Presidents Message:

Ahhh, finally spring, good things are starting to happen like open doors letting in fresh air and sun light, no more massive gas bills, Oklahoma Thunder just around the corner, hopefully no more ice or snow (although in Ok. you never know). Of course along with spring comes thunderstorms and yard work and in a couple of months massive electric bills (just can't win).

How often do things like this happen to you because of our hobby?

Just after I moved in here three years ago I noticed a nice 56 Bel Air about 2 blocks up the street. It sat outside for awhile and then again disappeared presumably into the garage. Sometime later a 1950 Chevy 2 door sedan showed up, somewhat rusty but pretty straight. It sat in front of the garage for months now, untouched, but obviously waiting it's turn.

Over the last year or so the 56 has sat outside in one form or another. First the body sat out minus front clip, then the car disappeared and the front clip sat out. In the meantime a really nice early 70's Nova arrived, not a project but a driver. All this time I'm thinking hey a Chevy nut lives here I should stop and introduce myself it seems we have a lot in common. I figured some day I'll see him out in the yard and I'll stop. Well, last week it finally happened, I'm headed to the parts store, not pressed for time, when I notice his garage door is open and he's standing just inside. I pull the El Camino into the drive and start to get out, he looks up. Before I even clear the car door he says "Jim Barnes". I'm a little taken aback!  As I get closer he starts to look somewhat familiar but my old brain can't pull it all together. After a few seconds I say "help?" he says "Larry Crow".  I'm sure all of you that were members of the other club back in the 70's and 80's will remember Larry. (good guy) He got out of the club in 1987 when he sold his Vette.

Of course we talked for a long time, catching up on each others lives over the last almost 25 years. I told him I lived just up the street and how I had thought many times I should stop and meet the Chevy nut with the "56". He ask if I lived in the spanish style house a couple of blocks up. He said everytime he drives by and the gate is open he tries to look in to see what's sitting around, seeing all the Vettes, El Caminos, etc. "he knew a Chevy nut must live there, he should stop and introduce himself, it looks like we have a lot in common."

TRUE MEANING OF TOOLS (PART 2)

WIRE WHEEL:  Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned guitar calluses from fingers in about the time it takes to say "s__t"

PLIERS:  Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

VISE-GRIPS:  Generally used after pliers to further round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

                                                                                      .....Jim.....

From the Governors Corner:

Hi all, here it is APRIL. Remember a few months ago when I said it would be here before you knew it, well its that time now. Just a few more weeks before our race weekend, hope everyone is ready. Please remember that we need everyones help to pull this off so keep that weekend clear, thats April 17-19th just in case you didnt remember.

One big thing has come up from our vice president of competition, effective immediately all classes or events that require a fire extinguisher in the car:

Fire extinguishers - minimum rating of 5BC using a gauge showing full charge . Then added, Mounting bracket and strap must be metal .

NOTE: Do to the immediacy of this change and with the competition season begun, this change will be have a transition period for individuals to comply until May 1, 2009.

The big thing here is that it must have a gauge, be mounted, AND have a metal strap and bracket holding it. We should make sure everyone is aware of the change at our event but effective May 1st it has to be done.

A note from our RE:

Convention 2009 Colorado Springs everything is running on schedule. At one of the party nights, they are encouraging members who are attending to participate in Club Table Decorating. Please encourage your club members who are attending to participate and have your Club Table. If you dont have very many members attending encourage them to join with another club or to join in on a Southwest Region Table.

See you at the April meeting .

Tom

Minutes of the Previous Meeting:

COMPETITION CORVETTES OF OKLAHOMA

MINUTES OF THE MARCH 4, 2009 MEETING

The meeting was called to order by President Jim Barnes at 7:25 pm. He welcomed Darrell & Sonja as visitors, as well as new members Tom and Cindy Richmond. He mentioned that Bruce Cone and his daughter Megan had joined, and that his son would be joining as a Primary membership also.

Jim asked for a motion to approve the February minutes as printed in the newsletter. Linda Lewis made the motion to approve, Tyler Lewis seconded. Motion carried.

REPORTS:

Vice President Tyler Lewis: No report at this time

Membership Charlene Finley: With the three that joined tonight, now stand at 32 members. The new lists she passed out does not include these three. Please let her know if you want the membership list emailed. Charlene also reported that the application has been revamped to a front/back 1-page instead of 2 pages, and that email and cell phone lines were added.

Editor Linda Bailey: Absent

Treasurer Linda Lewis: The deposit has been made for Hallett, Expo Square, and the insurance certificate. There is still money in the account.

President Jim Barnes brought up that he and Tom had been figuring out how to mount the timing lights. Jim showed us a proto-type of what he thought would work, which was a 10 square, double frame made of plexiglass with adjustable legs and the timing light mounted inside with Velcro . Asked for suggestions from other people. Need to get a party together to build whatever is decided on. Main points to consider are: adjustable to sit in grass or asphalt; weatherproof; transportable; light needs to be Velcro mounted to be able to replace them quickly. We have three weeks left to get the design figured out and built. If we go with Plexiglas, need a volunteer to cut the squares. Brian Wedlake volunteered to help.

Governor Tom Finley: Tom stated his report was in the newsletter. A couple of corrections need to be made in what had been posted in the past month or so. First is the

Test N Tune date that Cowtown is putting on. Go to CowtownVets.org to get flyer. Its on March 21 st in Mineral Wells. Let Tom know if you want to go. Linda Lewis said to look on our website for link.

Tom received a letter from Debbie regarding the Mid America Motorworks discount. Previously she had stated that you could log on even if you werent buying anything, provide them your email, and be eligible for a discount on your next order. Actually, if you give them your email, you will receive a special code which can be used on your next order to receive a special gift.

Tom received an email from a new governor that Mike Ward met at the Starbird show. He is with 4 State Vets, Inc, a NCCC club in Joplin, MO. The email was looking for ideas to improve and grow their club. Also extended an invite to get both clubs together and do events jointly. Their club will try to make the low-speed event at the Fairgrounds, but already had an event planned for Saturday.

Walt Jenkins, the 2009 Convention Director for NCCC, is inviting all NCCC clubs to put a congratulatory message in their magazine for NCCC making it 50 years. The only catch is you have to buy ad space. page is $20, page is $30, page is $40 and full page is $50. Must submit by April 1. Dale made a motion that the club purchase a page ad for $20 with a statement CCO is proud to be a part of NCCCs 50 th Anniversary Celebration. Include Tulsa, OK and the webpage address. Linda Lewis seconded. Motion carried. Linda Lewis is to design the ad.

Tom turned the floor over to Dale Acker to report on his attendance at the National Meeting for NCCC.

Dale gave the highlights from the convention. The National Convention is coming up. Early registration is over in April, price goes up after that. RCSs still beating up the situation with the driver school. May be hard for CCO to hold one in the future.

Also received new info from K&K on insurance certificates. K&K requires any non-sanctioned event to have an insurance certificate whenever wheels roll. Going to a club meeting doesnt require a certificate because the meeting is at the restaurant. However, if you are going to dinner and call it a caravan, a certificate is required. Anything advertised by the club or put in the newsletter which requires a car must have an insurance certificate. Need to have certificate two weeks prior to the event. Doesnt cost anything to get the certificate, its part of the our policy, but must plan in advance. If you know at the beginning of the year that you are going to the same place very month, you can get 1 certificate to cover the year. But if it is a different location, must be a different certificate. Discussed that the certificate covers property damage, not car damage. Tom asked Mike to let him know as far in advance as possible when he plans something so Tom could turn in request.

Dale reported that NCCC is not giving out pins anymore with membership packets. It is up to the Governor of each club to take an order for the pins. NCCC decided the perks in the membership package costs National several thousand dollars each year, so are not sending them out anymore. A special 50 th anniversary pin is available. Linda Lewis suggested buying some to give out to new members. Charlene suggested maybe getting something with our club logo also. The pins are $3.00 each. Dale Acker made a motion to have Tom order 30 pins at $3.00 each to be paid for by the club. Linda Lewis seconded. Motion carried.

Dale asked to be reimbursed for National expenses.

Social Mike Ward: Mike asked who was planning on going to Ponca City with the club on March 14 th . It was decided to cancel the event due to lack of participation.

Mike has been approached by Cherokee Casino to do a car show at their location in Sallisaw or Roland. Following are what each entity would provide:

                                          CCO to furnish:

  • up to 20 volunteers

  • manages the car show itself,

  • registration

  • parking, traffic

  • judging

  • awards

                                                Cherokee furnishes:

  • " CCO / Cherokee Car Show " logo tee shirts for all volunteers, CCO approves art work

  • outdoor pa system, stage - tent

  • live band, live entertainment all day

  • property frontage parking and access

  • additional pop up tents as needed

  • up to 20 hotel suites for CCO volunteers free

  • trophies, type and quantity as per CCO requests (200+-)

  • meals incidentals for CCO volunteers day of car show free

  • printing and mailing full color posters

  • all day radio station live spots, plus advertising before event

  • additional security for overnight vehicles

  • additional security for show

Show could be held anytime after Fourth of July. They would like us to include a parade on Friday night. Mike would like to see a portion of the registration fee go to a charity (please send Mike an email with ideas for the charity). If the show is successful enough for the Casino, then they might be willing to let the club hold a show at Cherokee Casino in Catoosa. Discussed that it would be an open show, with no limit on the trophies which Cherokee would be paying for. Could do peoples choice for judging.

Mike asked where the club wants to go, because a successful show could bump our club membership up in numbers. Kyle said the club needs to be bigger than 32 members, and that we need people who like to show. Clubs goal is to be a well-rounded club. It was decided that the car show would be held as a club event in Sallisaw/Roland on September 18 & 19, 2009.

OLD BUSINESS

Oklahoma Thunder: Tom Finley passed out the flyer. Mike asked if there was a poster version or pdf. version so he could put it on the Forum. Tom suggested putting an excerpt from the flyer and refer them to the CCO website where Linda will have all the info posted. At this time, the next timing meeting is in April. Need stands built for lights by end of March (Brian and Jim to work on this). Kyle is looking for a list on the computer of previous attendees so Tom can use it as a trial run. Linda has already received one registration.

NEW BUSINESS

Kurt stated that it is time to start talking about a name change. Would like Competition out of clubs name because everyone thinks its all about racing, which is a negative to a lot of people. He would like to see the club name changed before the car show.

Kurt said Mike worked really hard to get the El Chico location for the monthly meetings, and it is appreciated. But he would like to see the location changed from El Chico because of the cramped area and the restaurant noise which makes it hard to hear. Would like to see the location back at the library or a meeting hall. Mike reported that it wasnt working out as he had planned, and wasnt really fair to El Chico because we werent having the numbers they had anticipated.

Kurt Lewis made the motion to adjourn. Tom Richmond seconded. Motion carried. Meeting was adjourned at 8:50pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Melissa Wedlake

Corvette Trivia:

April

The C4 ZR1, came out with a key-operated switch, which, if activated by the owner, cut the power output in the car to 250-hp. Whose enthusiasm was this fiendish device designed to dampen?

  1. Car thieves

  2. Valets

  3. Wife driving husbands car.

Valets. The device was called the valet key and worked by locking out the second stage power boost. It reportedly did not stop valets from putting the pedal to the metal, but was more effective in convincing wives that is was a tamer car than it actually was.
